Arboretum Effort Is
An Award Winner

The Demarest Garden Club recently received the 2010 Special Award from the Garden Club of New Jersey.

The award was given for adding public access and solar power to Ed's Garden Railroad. The railroad, at the borough-owned Davies Arboretum, 49 Anderson Ave., is run by club members and other volunteers.

The three-year project was created and funded in memory of Edward Lamp of Norwood. Volunteers from the Garden Railroaders of Northern New Jersey designed and installed the solar power system, two-level layout, tracks, tunnels and small-scale rocky Alpine topography. Garden club and other volunteers designed and installed the landscape of miniature plants. Lamp was a member of the Demarest Garden Club and the Garden Railroaders.

From now until Oct. 15, garden club volunteers will run two G-scale trains (locomotives and four cars each) for public viewing on the first Tuesday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon.

The project was also selected to compete at the Central Atlantic Region garden club level. It will face projects from five other states (New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Ohio) and the District of Columbia. Results will be announced in October.
